6th Annual openhousenewyork Weekend launch party

6th Annual openhousenewyork Weekend presented by Target
October 4 & 5, 2008

Join Us in celebrating the 6th Annual openhousenewyork (OHNY) Weekend, America’s largest architecture and design event.

Our biggest event ever, the 2008 OHNY Weekend will allow the public to freely access nearly 200 sites of architecture and design significance throughout all five boroughs, including many that are normally closed to the public.  Visitors will also be able to join over 150 tours, talks, performances, family activities, and workshops that explore New York City by foot, bus, and even canoe!

Check in on September 26, 2008 for a full listing of sites and programs!

Highlights of the 2007 OHNY Weekend included free access to special places and spaces throughout NYC and educational programs incorporating OHNY’s six core programs:

opendialogues: conversations with architects, designers, planners and scholars onsite about the thoughts, challenges and inspirations that shape the built-environment on architect-led tours and open studios, including The Rockwell Group, Eisenman Architects, Beyer Blinder Belle, H3 Hardy Collaboration, Perkins+Will, and Peter L. Gluck + Partners, Architects.

sustainablenewyork: talks and tours focusing on sustainable methods and innovations including 26 sites and programs focused on green design such as Solar One, the city's only stand-alone solar-powered building; a tour of the Weeksville Heritage Center in Brooklyn, a free black community founded in 1838, and future home to a sustainable-design arts and education center.

architecturemoves: concerts and dance performances set against and inspired by the dramatic architecture, sculpture and landscape on New York City including a site-specific performance by Martha Bowers and Dance Theater Etcetera at Brooklyn’s The Green-Wood Cemetery and The Encampment, a multi-media installment on Roosevelt Island

OHNY Kids!: workshops, projects and tours designed especially for kids and families with an activity-filled OHNY Kids! Guide to be used at family-focused sites such as Tom Otterness Studio, Little Red Lighthouse, John J. Harvey Fireboat, Science Barge and Building Green Workshops.

OHNY Tours: walking tours with architects and expert scholars to exploring New York’s most interesting places and spaces such as Ellis Island’s South Side, the Brooklyn Navy Yard, the architecture of Roosevelt Island and Victorian Flatbush.

focus on architecture photography competition: Grab your camera and focus on your favorite sites during the weekend. Submit your digital images online in four categories: interiors, exteriors, details, people. In 2007, nearly 100 participants submitted over 600 photos taken during OHNY Weekend!

and much more!
