The FLAG Art Foundation
Thursday, May 28
6:30 - 8:30 pm
Designed by Gluckman Mayner Architects, the 7,600-square-foot private contemporary art space resides on the ninth and tenth floors of the Chelsea Arts Towers located in the heart of New York's art district. Windows line the north and south sides to allow for majestic views of the city. The ninth floor terrace features Ugo Rondinone's get up girl a sun is running the world (2006), a striking cast aluminum and white enamel tree sculpture. Richard Gluckman will be on-site to talk about the layout of the exhibition space and discuss his approach to design.
Fairfax & Sammons Residence
Thursday, June 4
6:30 - 8:30 pm
This pair of carriage houses in the West Village has an intriguing past. The smaller of the two houses was built in the 1880's as a stable, but was later converted in 1917 to a residence in the Colonial Revival style by architect Fayerwhether. Its larger neighbor was built in 1919 as an art studio for an Italian sculptor. The two were later purchased in the 1920's and renovated in the 1960's by Armand Hammer, the flamboyant industrialist and art collector, who joined both buildings and renovated them to be his pied-a-terre. Now home to architects Anne Fairfax & Richard Sammons, the carriage houses were renovated in 2003 and include a newly restored brick garden terrace with a two-story window wall, a mezzanine which wraps the second floor of the living room, and a redesigned skylight to flood the house with soft northern light. Anne Fairfax will be on-site to talk about the restoration.
Classic Townhouse, Modern Living
Thursday, June 11
6:30 - 8:30 pm
An 1830's four and a half-story Federal-style townhouse in the heart of Greenwich Village, the building has been renovated and restored by AND architects with Blesso Properties. Its previous owner had been living there for more than four decades since inheriting the townhouse from his grandmother, who bought it in 1878. The townhouse now includes a dramatic double-height living room with floor-to-ceiling glass and serene modern interiors, which seamlessly extend into the landscaped garden and outdoor roof terrace. Matt Blesso, Blesso Properties; Andrea Steele, AND Architects; and David Russo, r2P Studio will host the evening and speak about the building's history and restoration.
Modulightor
Thursday, June 18
6:30 - 8:30 pm
Designed and built by architect Paul Rudolph, this Manhattan townhouse serves as multi-use space. It is a private residence and home of the Paul Rudolph Foundation as well as a showroom and laboratory for Modulightor, a custom lighting company. The four-story steel structure building was one of the architect's last projects and demonstrates the spatial theories Rudolph was still testing late in his career. Paul Goldberger, the Architecture Critic for The New York Yorker and recipient of Pulitzer Prize for Distinguished Criticism, will lead the evening's dialogue. In addition, tours of the building will highlight the townhouse's modular, cubist design and highly complex floor plan as well as Paul Rudolph's and Ernst Wagner's - the architect's close friend - extensive collections on display throughout the house.
Broadway Penthouse
Thursday, June 25
6:30 - 8:30 pm
An open 3,000-square-foot penthouse loft with a 2,100-square-foot roof garden redefines the boundaries between inside and outside, integrating architecture and landscape design. It challenges the notion of an urban garden and literally "brings the outside in." A collaboration by Owner, Matt Blesso, Blesso Properties; Design Architect, Joel Sanders Architect; Landscape Designer, Balmori Associates; and Interior Designer and Architect of Record, Andrea Steele from AND Architects, the project offers a unique and quite stunning interpretation of the modern green design aesthetic. Matt Blesso and Andrea Steele will be on-site to speak about their innovative designs.
