The Volunteer Council is a self-governing body dedicated to supporting openhouse newyork's growth by managing, expanding, and improving its volunteer program. To that end, the mission of the Volunteer Council is to:

• build, lead, and maintain a strong volunteer presence to support openhousenewyork's activities and programs;
• enhance openhousenewyork's programs and activities by organizing, engaging, and educating its volunteers;
  
• enhance the volunteer experience; and
• encourage volunteers' shared appreciation for New York City's architecture and design and participation with openhousenewyork.

Primary responsibilities of the volunteer council are to assist in the recruitment, training and recognition of openhousenewyork volunteers throughout the year for special events, year-round programs, the annual OHNY Weekend. In addition, during the OHNY Weekend, volunteer council members assist the openhouse newyork staff as district coordinators who are responsible for the organization and management of designated sites and programs.

Benefits of being an OHNY Volunteer

• recognition in participating in the OHNY Weekend, America's largest
  architecture and design event, through OHNY website and at a special wine and
  cheese wrap party for OHNY Volunteers on Sunday evening.
• opportunity to meet New Yorkers and tourists who share your interest in
  architecture, design, history, and NYC's unique built-environment
• ability to advance to the front of the line at other site except those that require advance registration
• receive a volunteer t-shirt, hat and button

Time commitment of one shift of four hours as an OHNY Weekend Volunteer.

• volunteer for at least one four-hour shift on either Saturday or Sunday during the
  OHNY Weekend
• manage OHNY signup sheets, meet and greet visitors, manage lines
• work with Site and Program Sponsors (the owners and managers of the buildings and sites) to
  ensure that visitors we welcomed and follow any necessary building requirements

Mandatory attendance at two-hour training session prior to OHNY Weekend

• get your site assignment and learn about what is expected of you as an OHNY
  Volunteer
• hear more about openhousenewyork and why our volunteers make OHNY
  Weekend a success
• pick up the OHNY hat, shirt and button that all volunteers will wear during the
  Weekend

Do I get to pick my site?
We do everything possible to assign all volunteers to sites that fit their interests. With 350 sites and programs, this is not always possible. Your short shift time will allow you plenty of time to visit many other sites during the Weekend.


Can I volunteer in other ways?
openhousenewyork needs help throughout the year with year-round programs, special events, data entry, and site research. Email volunteer@ohny.org if you are interested in volunteering throughout the year at OHNY.
